Remaining Faithful

“And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged Him to touch him. And He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when He had spit on his eyes and laid His hands on him, He asked him, ‘Do you see anything?’ And he looked up and said, ‘I see people, but they look like trees, walking.’ Then Jesus laid His hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly,” (Mark 8:22-25).

There are several accounts within the gospels about Jesus and His miraculous healings. In most cases, the effects of the miraculous healings seem to be immediate.

For example,

“And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent around to all that region and brought to Him all who were sick and implored Him that they might only touch the fringe of His garment. And as many as touched it were made well,” (Matthew 14:35-36).

In this case, the written account displays this miracle as one that took its effect immediately and the people were made well. However, in the passage from Mark 8, it can be seen that the effects of the healing took a little longer.

When this blind man was brought before Jesus, Jesus would spit into the man’s eyes and lay His hands on the man. After doing this, Jesus asks the man, “Do you see anything?” The man responds with, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” So Jesus lays His hands on the man once again and his vision was restored.

The encouragement from this is one that is very prevalent today. When one becomes a Christian and begins their relationship with Christ, they are not fully grown. Spiritually speaking, it is during this time that there is much growth to be done. The blind man’s vision was not restored immediately but gradually got better. Similarly, the life of a Christian is one that grows stronger over time.
