Life’s Puzzles

“My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom from his mouth come knowledge and understanding,” (Proverbs 2:1-6).

The newspaper is not as common as it once was. For many, if you want the newspaper you are required to either purchase it online or at the local gas station. News reaches people so much faster than it ever did that whatever is on the newspaper is likely to be old news by the time it hits your doorstep.

One thing about the newspaper that many found enjoyable was the crossword puzzles that would come with it. One may sit on the front porch in the morning with a cup of coffee and attempt the day's crossword puzzle. As one works through the crossword puzzle, it is very common that they may ask somebody for help because they have gotten stuck on a particular clue. If you want to finish the crossword puzzle, it often takes some persistence, problem-solving, and perhaps seeking some wisdom.

Life also presents us with many challenges and puzzles of its own. Oftentimes these challenges and puzzles require some persistence, problem-solving, and perhaps seeking wisdom. Just like a crossword puzzle, where the clue leads to the next answer, our journey through faith requires us to seek understanding.

The passage from Proverbs chapter 2 reminds us of the importance of seeking wisdom and not giving up when we can’t find the answer.

“Making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom from his mouth come knowledge and understanding,” (Proverbs 2:2-6).

Just as you work through all of the clues in a crossword puzzle, we are encouraged to turn our hearts towards God’s loving word. Each piece of wisdom that He uncovers helps us to see the bigger picture that He has in store. When we encounter difficult “clues” in our journey, we can be confident that perseverance and seeking God’s wisdom will always lead us to the right answers.
