Blessed Are the Meek

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth,” (Matthew 5:5).

When one reflects on Jesus and His mission, it is rather difficult to not consider Luke chapter nineteen. In that passage, Jesus was passing through Jericho when the chief tax collector named Zacchaeus showed his eagerness to catch a glimpse of Jesus that he climbed a tree in order to get a better view of the miracle worker. As the famous story goes, Jesus saw Zacchaeus and commanded that he come down from the tree for He must stay at Zacchaeus’ house that very day. Now, many grumbled at this as Zacchaeus was a sinner and was of a profession that was often frowned upon and even despised. But Jesus said, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost,” (Luke 19:9-10).

As Christians, it is likely that you will face times in which people will challenge your faith and your beliefs. Many times this can make a person very angry and defensive. However, Peter says “but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame,” (1 Peter 3:15-16).

To be meek is to be gentle. A meek person is not one who acts out or is harsh towards others but one who respects others and is gentle towards others. It is as one acts with gentleness and respect towards others that not only will cause others to respect your beliefs but will cause others to see your good example and possibly follow that. Nobody is going to look at a so-called “Christian” who is constantly acting out, yelling at people, and being harsh and want to learn more about their religion or potentially even follow their path. However, a gentle, respectable, meek person is one who may gain many souls for Christ because of the way they handle themselves and how they handle the word of God.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth,” (Matthew 5:5).
