Give God Thanks
In our society, culture and time, we have seen prosperity and blessing the likes of which no nation in history could compare to (and this is true in spite of our nation’s current economic woes). We’re not perfect by a long shot; and in spite of the obvious moral decadence this country has endured over the years, we still live in the greatest nation on the planet! We have so much to be thankful for.
Yet, I’m often concerned that we have become spoiled in our prosperity. “We’ve been cursed with the blight of abundance” (as one preacher put it). Think of it, children of this generation seem to be less thankful and more expecting than previous generations were. In many ways we have become a “give-it-to-me, I-deserve-it” society. Yet when we receive our daily blessings, how often do we actually thank God for them?
Friends, “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness” (Ps. 24:1), therefore everything you own or ever hope to own (e.g., house, car, clothing, etc.) actually belongs to God. That you have it at all means that He has blessed you with it. God warned Israel about forgetting Him when He would cause them to prosper (Deut. 6:10-12; 8:1-20), and we would do well to heed the same warning.
So then, friends, “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thess. 5:18).
