Born This Way?

As you may have noticed, homosexuality has been in the news quite a bit as of late.  The issue of gay marriage is before our Supreme Court.  Our president has stated that he now believes homosexuals should have the right to get married.  DC Comics recently announced that one of their popular heroes, The Green Lantern, is now officially a gay man.  Our culture, it seems, is moving more and more towards the predominant acceptance of homosexuality as a legitimate lifestyle.  But is it?

One of the main arguments that proponents of the homosexual agenda will use is that homosexuality is not a choice, but rather, individuals are born either straight or gay.  As such, they will claim that Christians are bigoted and unfair in their opposition of homosexuality.  We know that the scriptures clearly state that homosexuality is and always has been considered an abomination in the eyes of God…

Under the Patriarchal Law:

Jude 7 - ...as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Under the Mosaic Law:

Lev. 20:13 - If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.

Under the Law of Christ:

Rom. 1:26-27 - For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

If people are born homosexuals, then, as we see from the scriptures above, they are born sinners!  The scriptures, however, make plain that we are not born into sin.

Eccl. 7:29 - Truly, this only I have found: That God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes.

Ezek. 18:20 - The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

We must remember that sin is a transgression of the law of God (1 John 3:4).  What sin has an infant or small child committed?  Recall how that when David’s infant son died, he stated “I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me (2 Sam. 12:23).”  The implication being, of course, that the sinless child was now with God in paradise.  Thus, we can conclude that we are not born sinners and, as such, individuals are not born homosexual just as they are not born murderers, thieves, or liars.

Those with an immoral agenda will often use “profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge (“science” – KJV)” to support their cause.  As such, Paul states that they have “strayed concerning the faith (1 Tim. 6:20-21).”

It is often our impulse to point the finger and condemn those practicing homosexuality, but we must remember that, while we may not have ever engaged in such practices, we have ourselves sinned!

1 Cor. 6:9-11 - Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

Therefore, let us, with love (Eph. 4:15), strive to reach out to those who are caught up in the sin of homosexuality (or are supporters of such) and strive to show them the truth concerning these matters so that they might turn from their sin and be saved (Acts 2:38)!
